This October sees the release of 'The TJM Story' by Tony Davidson, a man who isn't perhaps as well known as the likes of Tony Wilson, Rob Gretton or Martin Hannett however is equally important, if not more so, in some areas and whose involvement facilitated the development and growth of a number of individuals and bands which has led to artists such as New Order and Simply Red being heard around the world.

Tony Davidson bought the building at 35, Little Peter Street, Manchester in late 1977. “As soon as I walked in,” he recalls of the building that became a rehearsal space and studio complex, “I could feel the Dickensian atmosphere which suited the music of the time. Joy Division are on record as saying that the atmosphere in their practice room gave them the inspiration to write their iconic songs.

Other bands such as Buzzcocks, Slaughter & The Dogs, The Fall, The Distractions and others insist it had a similar effect on their output.” Or, in the immortal words of Mark E Smith: “TJ Davidson’s rehearsal studios was a mad mix of effing creativity, hearing the sounds of Buzzcocks, Joy Division etc, mixing with that guy Hucknall, creating an intoxicating sound. It was surreal.”

In addition to being autobiographical, the e book is filled with unique interviews with Manchester legends who rehearsed at TJ Davidsons. A lot of whom have been making their first steps within the music world when encountering one another within the late ’70s. To offer you a flavour, we’re speaking Buzzcocks; The Fall; Unhappy Cafe; The Freshies; Quick Vehicles; Ludus; Salford Jets; Ed Banger and The Nosebleeds; The Frantic Elevators and naturally Pleasure Division. That’s not even scraping the tip of the iceberg. In addition to the recognisable bands from that period, many people rehearsing on the observe rooms have been of their formative bands and would obtain success afterward. Characters reminiscent of Mike Sweeney; Mick Hucknell; Morrissey; Johnny Marr; Billy Duffy; Marc Radcliffe.

Spanning over 237 pages, Chris Connelly has accomplished a incredible job on the design. It’s bursting with interviews and anecdotes. It’s visually beautiful too, with uncommon picture’s, scans of posters and ticket stubs, and options a number of illustrations from the famend native playwright, actor and artist Brian Gorman. This e book covers many bases and when you decide it up, will discover it tough to place it down.
